Possessives

৯.১ শিখনফল ও বিশ্লেষণের ধরন

▣ Key Points
  • Possessives show ownership or a relationship between a person and something connected with that person.
  • A possessive can answer a question beginning with “Whose”.
  • Add ’s to a singular noun when the noun shows possession.
  • Add ’s to an irregular plural noun because it does not end in s.
  • Add only an apostrophe to a regular plural noun that already ends in s.
  • A singular noun ending in s may take ’s in its possessive form.
  • Only an apostrophe may follow a singular noun ending in s when adding ’s would create an unpleasant hissing sound.
  • A possessive form placed before a noun identifies the owner of that noun.
  • A possessive form used after a verb or as a subject can stand without a following noun.
  • Possessive pronouns have two forms: one used before a noun and another used after a verb or as a subject.
  • The forms my, our, and their come before nouns, while mine, ours, and theirs can stand independently.
  • When two related sentences contain its or their, a possessive noun can join the sentences by showing the owner directly.

৯.২ বিশ্লেষণের কাঠামো

Possessives — সূত্রাবলী
  1. Possessive → ownership or relationship
  2. Possessive → answer to “Whose”
  3. Singular noun + ’s → possessive noun
  4. Irregular plural noun + ’s → possessive noun
  5. Regular plural noun ending in s + ’ → possessive noun
  1. Singular noun ending in s + ’s → possessive noun
  2. Singular noun ending in s + ’ → possessive noun when an unpleasant hissing sound is avoided
  3. Possessive before a noun → identifies the owner
  4. Possessive after a verb or as a subject → stands without a following noun
  5. my, our, their + noun; mine, ours, theirs → independent possessive forms

৯.৩ Type-১ : সারসংক্ষেপ ও ঘটনাক্রম

The lesson explains that possessives show ownership or a relationship and often answer the question “Whose”. It introduces possessives through a short school-life passage, where forms such as our, my and Sushil’s show connection or belonging. The central idea is supported by the line “They show ownership and relationship.”

The poem develops the same idea through repeated questions about a child. The parent first answers “Mine” and later the parent and teacher answer “Ours”; therefore, the possessive forms show both personal care and shared responsibility. The prose story then uses forms such as his, their, room’s and friend’s to connect people with beds, rooms, families and descriptions. The evidence is found in “Mine,” said the parent with a tender smile and “Ours,” said the parent and the teacher as they smiled.

OrderEventImportance
১The opening passage introduces possessives in familiar school situations. It shows ownership and relationship through people and things. “Uncle Masud drives our school bus.”
২The poem asks “Whose child is this?” and receives the answers “Mine” and “Ours”.It demonstrates independent possessive forms and shared responsibility. “Ours to love and train together.”
৩The formation section explains possessive nouns for singular nouns, irregular plurals, regular plurals and singular nouns ending in s.It teaches when to use ’s and when to use only an apostrophe. “An apostrophe is placed at the end of regular plural nouns.”
৪The story and sentence-joining activity apply possessives in connected sentences. They show how its or their can be replaced by a possessive noun. “The man’s vivid descriptions of passing things seen through the window inspired him to live.”
শর্টকাট পদ্ধতি
For a possessive sentence, follow three steps: (১) ask “Whose?”; (২) identify the owner; (৩) place the correct possessive form before the related noun, or use an independent form such as mine or ours. For a two-sentence join, replace its or their with the owner plus the correct apostrophe form.

Worked example: Two related ideas are given: “There is a parent. The parent’s smile is tender.”
Conventional method: identify the owner → parent; identify the related noun → smile; add ’s to the singular noun → parent’s; combine them → The parent’s smile is tender.
Shortcut: ask “Whose smile?” → “the parent’s” → The parent’s smile is tender. The shortcut reaches the same answer in one direct identification instead of several separate checks. The wording is supported by “the parent with a tender smile”.

Practice question and solution: Join the sentences with a possessive: “There is a child. Its mind is dear.”
Conventional method: the owner is child; child is singular, so add ’s; replace its and join the sentences → The child’s mind is dear.
Shortcut: ask “Whose mind?” → “the child’s mind”.
∴ Answer: The child’s mind is dear. The phrase “dear little mind” confirms the relationship between the child and the mind.

  • Use mine or ours when the possessive stands without a following noun.
  • Check whether the owner is singular, an irregular plural, or a regular plural ending in s.
  • Use the question “Whose?” to test the ownership or relationship shown by the possessive.

৯.৪ Type-১ অনুশীলন ও উত্তর

Ex. একটি গাড়ি ৯০ কি.মি. পথ ২ ঘণ্টায় অতিক্রম করে। গাড়িটির গতিবেগ নির্ণয় করো।
Sol:
Sol:
Sol:
Sol:
Sol:

৯.৫ Type-২ : চরিত্র বিশ্লেষণ

Character analysis explains what a person does, says, and shows in a text. In this unit, the characters are understood through their relationships, care, responsibility, and actions. Each point below is supported by a short quotation from the lesson.

The narrator is observant and friendly because the narrator notices Sushil’s situation and helps him. Sushil is presented as a brilliant student and a friend. In the poem, the parent and the teacher share responsibility for the child. In the hospital story, the man by the window helps his roommate imagine the outside world through his descriptions.

বিশ্লেষণের কাঠামো
Step ১: Identify the character and observe the character’s action or words.
Step ২: Choose a suitable quality only from the evidence.
Step ৩: Select a short quotation that proves the quality.
Step ৪: Explain how the quotation reveals the character’s role or relationship.
Step ৫: For theme, ask what main idea the actions support; for tone, notice the feeling of the words; for a literary image, notice repeated or descriptive expressions.

Main and Supporting Characters

CharacterQualityEvidence from the text
The narratorHelpful and friendly“As Sushil is a friend of mine, I have lent him my pencil.”
SushilBrilliant and connected with the narrator“Sushil, my friend, also goes with me.”
“He is a brilliant student of our class.”
The parentCaring and responsible“Mine,” said the parent with a tender smile.
The teacherA shared guide for the child“Ours,” said the parent and the teacher as they smiled.
The man by the windowDescriptive and encouraging“His friend’s vivid descriptions of passing things seen through the window inspired him to live.”
The listenerEager and imaginative“The listener would close his eyes and see everything in his mind’s eye.”

A Complete Sample Analysis: Sushil

Conventional method: First, identify the character: Sushil. Next, collect the character’s direct description and relationship with the narrator. The text calls him “my friend” and says, “He is a brilliant student of our class.” These quotations show that Sushil is both a friend of the narrator and a good student. The sentence about his lost pencil box shows a difficulty in his schoolwork: “Today, Sushil’s pencil box has been lost. So he has not completed his homework.” Finally, the narrator’s help confirms their friendly relationship: “I have lent him my pencil.”

Shortcut method: Ask three quick questions: Who is the character? What quality is directly stated? What action proves the relationship? Answer: Sushil; he is brilliant; he is the narrator’s friend, and the narrator lends him a pencil. Therefore, Sushil is a brilliant student who has a friendly relationship with the narrator. The conventional method checks the evidence in separate steps; the shortcut reaches the same conclusion by linking the name, quality, and action directly.

Model answer: Sushil is a brilliant student and a friend of the narrator. The text says, “He is a brilliant student of our class.” It also says, “Sushil, my friend, also goes with me.” Although his pencil box is lost and he cannot complete his homework, the narrator helps him by lending him a pencil. The quotation “I have lent him my pencil” proves their friendly relationship.

Practice Question and Solution

Question: What kind of person is the narrator? Explain your answer with two quotations from the text.

Conventional method:
১. Identify the narrator’s action: the narrator lends Sushil a pencil.
২. Identify the narrator’s relationship with Sushil: Sushil is called “my friend”.
৩. Connect the action and relationship: the narrator is helpful and friendly.
৪. Support the conclusion with the quotations “Sushil, my friend, also goes with me” and “I have lent him my pencil.”

Shortcut solution: Ask, “What does the narrator do for the friend?” The answer is, “I have lent him my pencil.” Ask, “What relationship is named?” The answer is, “my friend.” Therefore, the narrator is helpful and friendly. ∴ The narrator is a helpful and friendly person because the text says, “Sushil, my friend, also goes with me” and “I have lent him my pencil.”

Sol:
Sol:
Sol:
Sol:
Sol:

৯.৭ Type-৩ : মূলভাব ও বার্তা (Theme)

মূলভাব ও বার্তা: A theme is the central idea that a text develops. In this unit, the main theme is that possessives express ownership as well as relationships. The poem develops this idea from personal care to shared responsibility. The changing answers, “Mine,” and later, “Ours,” show that a child is cared for first by a parent and then supported by both the parent and the teacher. The line “Ours to love and train together” gives the poem’s message of cooperation and shared duty.

বিশ্লেষণের কাঠামো
১. Identify the repeated idea or important relationship.
২. Notice what the characters do or say.
৩. Select a short quotation as evidence.
৪. State the message in one clear sentence.
৫. Check whether the tone is caring, serious, or encouraging and connect it to the evidence.

জেনে রাখুন: A sub-theme may explain how the main idea works in a particular situation. In the hospital story, the sub-theme is care through encouragement. The man by the window helps his roommate imagine the outside world by describing it. His descriptions give hope and strengthen the other man’s will to live. This is supported by the sentence, “His friend’s vivid descriptions of passing things seen through the window inspired him to live.” The tone of this part is caring and hopeful because one person uses his words to help another.

একটি সমাধানকৃত উদাহরণ: What is the main message of the poem about the child?
প্রচলিত পদ্ধতি:
১. Find the repeated question: “Whose child is this?”
২. Observe the answers: the parent says, “Mine,” while the parent and the teacher later say, “Ours”.
৩. Explain the change: responsibility is not limited to one person; the parent and teacher share it.
৪. Write the message with evidence: The poem teaches that children need love, care, teaching, and joint guidance. The quotation “Ours to love and train together” supports this message.
শর্টকাট: Repeated question + changing answer + final action → shared care and responsibility. Therefore, the poem’s message is that a child should be loved and guided together by the family and the teacher. The shortcut reaches the answer by checking the repeated idea and the final quotation directly.

অনুশীলন প্রশ্ন ও সমাধান: What message does the hospital story give? Explain with two quotations.
সমাধান:
১. The man by the window speaks to his roommate every afternoon.
২. His descriptions help the listener imagine the park, lake, children, and boats outside.
৩. The listener’s hope grows because of this friendly support.
৪. The story gives the message that kindness and encouraging words can help a suffering person. This is proved by “The man by the window told his friend all this in detail” and “His friend’s vivid descriptions of passing things seen through the window inspired him to live.”
∴ The message is that caring words and companionship can give hope and courage.

৯.৯ Type-৪ : ভাষা, অলংকার ও সুর

Language analysis explains how the lesson creates meaning through repeated words, clear description, and the feelings shown by the speakers. The possessives lesson has a gentle and caring voice. In the poem, the repeated question “Whose child is this?” keeps attention on the child’s care, while the answer changes from “Mine” to “Ours”. In the hospital story, the descriptive language creates a hopeful picture of the world outside the window.

বিশ্লেষণের কাঠামো
১. Find a repeated word, action, or important description.
২. Identify the feeling created by that language.
৩. Check the speaker’s words and the surrounding event.
৪. Select a short quotation as evidence.
৫. State the tone or effect in one clear sentence.
Shortcut: repeated idea + exact quotation + effect → tone or literary feature.

Remember that a simile compares two things directly, a metaphor presents one thing as another, personification gives a human quality to a non-human thing, and imagery helps the reader see or imagine a scene. This lesson does not give an explicit simile, metaphor, or personification. Its strongest device is imagery: “The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.” The details “Ducks and swans played on the water” and “children floated their paper boats” make the outside scene lively and pleasant.

Literary featureExampleEffect
SimileNo explicit simile appears in the given passages. The lesson depends more on direct description than on comparison.
MetaphorNo explicit metaphor appears in the given passages. The meaning remains clear and direct for the learner.
PersonificationNo non-human thing is given a human quality in the given passages. The focus stays on people, care, and real actions.
Imagery“Ducks and swans played on the water, while children floated their paper boats.”The reader can imagine a peaceful outdoor scene and feel the hope it gives.

Worked example: What is the tone of the hospital story? Conventional method: First, observe the man’s action: “Every afternoon, the man in the bed by the window would sit up and talk to his roommate”. Next, notice the positive result: “His friend’s vivid descriptions of passing things seen through the window inspired him to live.” These details show care, companionship, and hope. Therefore, the tone is caring and encouraging. Shortcut: caring action + hopeful effect → caring and encouraging tone. ∴ Answer: The tone of the hospital story is caring and encouraging. The conventional method needs several checks; the shortcut reaches the same answer through the repeated caring action and its hopeful result.

Practice question and solution: How does repetition affect the poem’s message? Conventional method: The question “Whose child is this?” appears again and again. The parent first says “Mine”, and later the answer becomes “Ours”. The final words, “Ours to love and train together,” show that care is shared by the parent and the teacher. ∴ Answer: Repetition keeps the reader focused on the child and strengthens the message of shared care and responsibility. Shortcut: repeated question + “Mine” → “Ours” → personal care grows into shared responsibility.

প্রচলিত পদ্ধতি:
১. প্রথম বাক্যে possessive form হলো their.
২. their-এর পরে room আছে, তাই এটি noun-এর আগে ব্যবহৃত form।
৩. দ্বিতীয় বাক্যে room-এর পরে আর কোনো noun নেই; possessive form-টি স্বাধীনভাবে দাঁড়াবে।
৪. their-এর independent form হলো theirs.
৫. সম্পূর্ণ বাক্য: This is their room. The room is theirs.
উদ্ধৃতি: “This is our country.” এবং “Ours is a beautiful country.”

noun-এর আগে থাকলে my, our, their-এর মতো form এবং noun ছাড়া স্বাধীনভাবে থাকলে mine, ours, theirs-এর মতো form ব্যবহার করো।
Ex. Identify the possessive forms in the sentence: “His friend’s vivid descriptions of passing things seen through the window inspired him to live.” Explain what each form shows.
Sol:
His friend’s vivid descriptions”
শর্টকাট: Whose descriptions? → the friend’s descriptions; Whose friend? → his friend.
শর্টকাটে একবার “Whose?” প্রশ্ন করেই দুইটি possessive form শনাক্ত করা যায়; প্রচলিত পদ্ধতিতে প্রতিটি form আলাদা করে পরীক্ষা করতে হয়।
∴ Ans. “His” হলো possessive form এবং “friend’s” হলো singular possessive noun; উভয়ই relationship দেখায়।
Ex. Join the sentences with a possessive: “There are children. Their garments are sold in that market.”
Sol:
প্রচলিত পদ্ধতি:

২. children হলো irregular plural noun; এটি s-এ শেষ হয় না।
৩. irregular plural noun-এর শেষে ’s বসবে: children’s.
৪. their-এর পরিবর্তে children’s বসিয়ে বাক্য দুটি যুক্ত করো।
৫. সম্পূর্ণ বাক্য: The children’s garments are sold in that market.
উদ্ধৃতি: “Children’s garments are sold in that market.”
শর্টকাট: Whose garments? → the children’s garments.
শর্টকাটে owner ও related noun সরাসরি মিলিয়ে নেওয়া যায়; তাই noun-এর ধরন পরীক্ষা করার দীর্ঘ ধাপটি দ্রুত সম্পন্ন হয়।
∴ Ans. The children’s garments are sold in that market.
Ex. Explain the apostrophe in the sentence: “Mira is in the girls’ hostel.”
Sol:
প্রচলিত পদ্ধতি: প্রথমে hostel-এর সঙ্গে কার সম্পর্ক তা নির্ণয় করতে হবে।
Whose hostel? → the girls’ hostel.
girls হলো regular plural noun এবং এটি s-এ শেষ হয়েছে।
তাই s-এর পরে শুধু apostrophe বসবে: girls’.
উদ্ধৃতি: “Mira is in the girls’ hostel.”
Ex. Choose the suitable possessive form and explain the two possible forms: “They visited Sirajus___ new house.”

উদ্ধৃতি: “They visited Sirajus’s new house.” এবং “They visited Sirajus’ new house.”
শর্টকাট: singular noun ending in s → ’s; hissing sound এড়ালে → ’.
শর্টকাটে noun-এর শেষ অক্ষর দেখে সঙ্গে সঙ্গে দুইটি গ্রহণযোগ্য possessive form নির্ণয় করা যায়; প্রচলিত পদ্ধতিতে উচ্চারণের অসুবিধাটিও বিবেচনা করা হয়।
∴ Ans. সঠিক রূপ দুটি হতে পারে: Sirajus’s অথবা hissing sound এড়াতে Sirajus’.
Ex. Complete and explain the possessive forms: “Sushil is a friend of ___. I have lent him ___ pencil.”
Sol:
প্রচলিত পদ্ধতি:
১. প্রথম শূন্যস্থানের পরে কোনো noun নেই; তাই স্বাধীন possessive form ব্যবহার হবে: mine.
২. দ্বিতীয় শূন্যস্থানের পরে noun “pencil” আছে; তাই noun-এর আগে ব্যবহৃত form হবে: my.
৩. সম্পূর্ণ বাক্য: Sushil is a friend of mine. I have lent him my pencil.
উদ্ধৃতি: “Sushil is a friend of mine” এবং “I have lent him my pencil.”
শর্টকাট: noun নেই → mine; noun আছে → my.
