২.১ শিখনফল ও বিশ্লেষণের ধরন
Evidence: “They help a speaker show ability, permission, obligation, possibility, or politeness.”
| Analysis direction | What to look for | Where the evidence appears |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Ability, permission, obligation, possibility, advice, or willingness | “Modals are auxiliary verbs such as can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would” |
| Form | A modal comes before the base form of the main verb | “In standard English, modals are used with a base verb” |
| Force | Whether the sentence gives a strong requirement, advice, permission, or possibility | “The modal often changes not the action, but the speaker’s attitude toward the action.” |
- Modals are auxiliary verbs that change the meaning of a main verb.
- Can commonly shows present ability.
- Could may show past ability or a more polite form.
- May is commonly used to show formal permission.
- Can may also be used to show permission.
- Must expresses strong necessity or obligation.
- Should expresses advice or recommendation rather than a compulsory order.
- A modal is normally followed directly by the base form of the main verb.
- The main verb does not take -s, -ed, or -ing after a modal in the basic form.
- In a negative sentence, not comes after the modal.
- Choosing a different modal can change the force and exact meaning of a sentence.
First identify the intended meaning: ability, permission, obligation, advice, or possibility. Then choose the modal that matches that meaning.
Evidence: “Decide whether you want to show ability, permission, obligation, advice, possibility, or willingness.”
Can often shows ability, may often shows permission, must shows strong necessity, and should gives advice.
Evidence: “For example, use can for ability, may for permission, must for strong obligation, and should for advice.”
Situation: A class rule requires students to wear identification cards.
Question: You want to give good advice about drinking water in hot weather. Which modal is suitable?
Solution: The sentence gives advice, not a strict order. The suitable modal is should.
∴ Answer: should.
Check the word immediately after the modal. It must be the base form of the main verb: modal + base verb.
Evidence: “Modal + base verb is the usual pattern.”
Do not add -s after a modal and do not place to before the main verb. For example, “She can sing well” is correct, while “She can sings well” is incorrect.
Evidence: “After a modal, use the base form of the verb: ‘She can sing well.’”
Sentence: “He must to finish early.”
Question: Correct the sentence: “Rita can solves this puzzle.”
Solution: The modal is can. The main verb must be in the base form, so solves becomes solve.
∴ Answer: “Rita can solve this puzzle.”
ক must

ঘ would
Answer: ক must
ক You can borrow my ruler.
খ You may borrow my ruler.
গ You must borrow my ruler.
ঘ You should borrow my ruler.
Answer: খ You may borrow my ruler.
ক He must know the answer.
খ He should know the answer.
গ He may know the answer.

২.২ বিশ্লেষণের কাঠামো
২.৩ Type-১ : সারসংক্ষেপ ও ঘটনাক্রম
Modals are auxiliary verbs that modify the meaning of a main verb. They show ability, permission, obligation, possibility, advice, willingness, or politeness. The main action may remain the same, but the speaker’s attitude changes. The chapter explains this idea through the statement, “They help a speaker show ability, permission, obligation, possibility, or politeness.”
The usual structure is modal + base verb. After a modal, the main verb does not take -s, -ed, or -ing, and to is not placed before the verb. A negative sentence places not after the modal. This rule is supported by the example, “After a modal, use the base form of the verb: ‘She can sing well.’”
উদ্ধৃতিটি অধ্যায়ের নির্দেশনার সঙ্গে মেলে: “Modal + base verb is the usual pattern.”
১. Ability, permission, obligation, advice, possibility অথবা willingness চিহ্নিত করো।
২. Can, could, may, might, must, should, will
প্রতিটি ধাপের প্রমাণ হলো, “Start with the meaning you want to express.”
| ক্রম | ঘটনা | গুরুত্ব |
|---|---|---|
| ১ | Modal-কে auxiliary verb হিসেবে শনাক্ত করা | এটি main verb-এর অর্থ পরিবর্তন করে। উদ্ধৃতি: “Modals are auxiliary verbs” |
| ২ | বাক্যের উদ্দেশ্য নির্ণয় করা | Ability, permission, obligation বা advice-এর পার্থক্য বোঝা যায়। উদ্ধৃতি: “Decide whether you want to show ability, permission, obligation, advice, possibility, or willingness.” |
| ৩ | অর্থের উপযুক্ত modal বেছে নেওয়া | বাক্যের exact shade of meaning ঠিক হয়। উদ্ধৃতি: “Choose the modal that matches that meaning.” |
| ৪ | Modal-এর পরে base verb বসানো | গঠনগত ভুল এড়ানো যায়। উদ্ধৃতি: “The main verb does not take -s, -ed, or -ing after a modal in the basic form.” |
| ৫ | বাক্যের force যাচাই করা | Strong requirement, advice, permission বা possibility আলাদা করা যায়। উদ্ধৃতি: “The modal often changes not the action, but the speaker’s attitude toward the action.” |
সমাধানকৃত উদাহরণ: বাক্য: “Students should wait.”
ধাপ ১: বাক্যটি advice প্রকাশ করছে।
ধাপ ২: Advice-এর জন্য উপযুক্ত modal হলো should।
ধাপ ৩: should-এর পরে base verb wait বসেছে।
ধাপ ৪: wait-এর শেষে -s, -ed বা -ing নেই।
∴ Answer: should expresses advice; pattern: should + wait.
অনুশীলন প্রশ্ন ও সমাধান: Correct the sentence: “They may to wait.”
ধাপ ১: Modal হলো may।
ধাপ ২: Modal-এর পরে to বসে না।
ধাপ ৩: to বাদ দিয়ে base verb wait বসাতে হবে।
∴ Answer: “They may wait.”
২.৪ Type-১ অনুশীলন ও উত্তর
অর্থ → উপযুক্ত modal → modal-এর পরে base verb → বাক্যের force
| ক্রম | যা পরীক্ষা করতে হবে | প্রমাণ |
|---|---|---|
| ১ | বাক্যের অর্থ নির্ণয় | “Decide whether you want to show ability, permission, obligation, advice, possibility, or willingness.” |
| ২ | অর্থ অনুযায়ী modal নির্বাচন | “Choose the modal that matches that meaning.” |
| ৩ | base verb যাচাই | “After a modal, use the base form of the verb.” |
| ৪ | বাক্যের force পরীক্ষা | “The modal often changes not the action, but the speaker’s attitude toward the action.” |
নার্সের বক্তব্যে প্রয়োজনীয়তার অর্থ স্পষ্ট, কারণ পাঠ্যাংশে বলা হয়েছে, “You must take this medicine twice a day,” এবং এটিকে suggestion নয় বলে ব্যাখ্যা করা হয়েছে।
| চরিত্র | বৈশিষ্ট্য | পাঠ্যাংশের প্রমাণ |
|---|---|---|
| প্রধান চরিত্র: নার্স | দৃঢ় প্রয়োজনীয়তা প্রকাশ করেন | “You must take this medicine twice a day.” |
| পার্শ্বচরিত্র: রোগী | নির্দেশের অর্থ বুঝে কাজ করবেন | “the patient may think it is optional and miss an important dose.” |
| পার্শ্বচরিত্র: মি. শর্মা | শ্রেণিকে বাধ্যতামূলক কাজের নির্দেশ দেন | “he wants to tell his class that handing in the project tomorrow is necessary.” |
| পার্শ্বচরিত্র: অনিতা | বর্তমান সক্ষমতার উদাহরণ | “Anita can speak French.” |
| পার্শ্বচরিত্র: রবি | অতীত সক্ষমতার উদাহরণ | “When he was younger, Ravi could run very fast.” |
পাঠ্যাংশের সতর্কতাটি হলো, “small changes in these words can change real decisions.”
সমাধানকৃত উদাহরণ: পরিস্থিতি: মি. শর্মা শিক্ষার্থীদের জানাচ্ছেন যে আগামীকাল project জমা দেওয়া প্রয়োজন। ধাপ ১: বক্তা মি. শর্মা; ধাপ ২: তাঁর উদ্দেশ্য strong obligation প্রকাশ করা; ধাপ ৩: উপযুক্ত modal হলো must; ধাপ ৪: পাঠ্যাংশের বাক্যটি হলো “You must submit the project tomorrow.”
শর্টকাটে: Anita → can → present ability। ∴ উত্তর: অনিতা বর্তমানে ফরাসি বলতে সক্ষম।
- “May I come in?” — বক্তার ভদ্র permission চাওয়ার উদ্দেশ্য প্রকাশ করে।
- “You should rest.” — বক্তার advice বা recommendation প্রকাশ করে।
- “The bird might fly away.” — বক্তার possibility বোঝায়।
The modal often changes not the action, but the speaker’s attitude toward the action.”
You must take this medicine twice a day.”
শর্টকাটে একই কাজ দ্রুত করা যায়: ব্যক্তি → উদ্দেশ্য → modal। উদাহরণ: নার্স → প্রয়োজনীয় নির্দেশ → must।
উদ্ধৃতি: “must for strong obligation”
| চরিত্র | modal | প্রকাশিত অর্থ | পাঠ্যাংশের প্রমাণ |
|---|---|---|---|
| নার্স | must | দৃঢ় প্রয়োজনীয়তা | “You must take this medicine twice a day.” |
| মি. শর্মা | must | বাধ্যবাধকতা | “You must submit the project tomorrow.” |
| অনিতা | can | বর্তমান সক্ষমতা | “Anita can speak French.” |
| রবি | could | অতীত সক্ষমতা | “When he was younger, Ravi could run very fast.” |
উদ্ধৃতি: “the modal verb changes the whole meaning of the instruction.”
“You must submit the project tomorrow.”
প্রচলিত পদ্ধতি:
ধাপ ১: চরিত্রটি হলেন মি. শর্মা, যিনি শ্রেণিকে নির্দেশ দিচ্ছেন।
ধাপ ২: আগামীকাল project জমা দেওয়া প্রয়োজন।
ধাপ ৩: modal হলো must।
ধাপ ৪: must strong obligation প্রকাশ করে।
ধাপ ৫: এটি permission বা সাধারণ advice নয়।
উদ্ধৃতি: “he wants to tell his class that handing in the project tomorrow is necessary.”
শর্টকাট: মি. শর্মা → প্রয়োজনীয় জমা → must → বাধ্যবাধকতা।
সময়ের তুলনা: প্রচলিত পদ্ধতিতে ব্যক্তি, উদ্দেশ্য ও force আলাদা করে দেখতে হয়; শর্টকাটে তিনটি সংকেতেই অর্থ ধরা যায়।
∴ উত্তর: মি. শর্মা দৃঢ় বাধ্যবাধকতা প্রকাশ করছেন।
প্রশ্ন: “Anita can speak French.” বাক্যে অনিতার কোন বৈশিষ্ট্য প্রকাশ পেয়েছে?
প্রচলিত পদ্ধতি:
ধাপ ১: চরিত্রটি হলেন অনিতা।
ধাপ ২: বাক্যে তাঁর একটি কাজ করার সামর্থ্য প্রকাশ পেয়েছে।
ধাপ ৩: modal হলো can।
ধাপ ৪: can সাধারণত present ability প্রকাশ করে।
উদ্ধৃতি: “Can usually shows present ability.”
শর্টকাট: Anita → can → present ability।
সময়ের তুলনা: প্রচলিত পদ্ধতিতে বাক্যের ব্যক্তি ও modal-এর অর্থ মিলিয়ে দেখতে হয়; শর্টকাটে নাম ও modal দেখেই উত্তর নির্ণয় করা যায়।
∴ উত্তর: অনিতা বর্তমানে ফরাসি বলতে সক্ষম।
প্রশ্ন: “When he was younger, Ravi could run very fast.” বাক্যে রবি সম্পর্কে কোন অতীত বৈশিষ্ট্য বোঝা যায়?
প্রচলিত পদ্ধতি:
ধাপ ১: চরিত্রটি হলেন রবি।
ধাপ ২: বক্তব্যে তাঁর ছোটবেলার সামর্থ্যের কথা বলা হয়েছে।
ধাপ ৩: modal হলো could।
ধাপ ৪: could এখানে past ability প্রকাশ করছে।
ধাপ ৫: তাই এটি বর্তমান সক্ষমতা নয়; অতীতের সক্ষমতা।
উদ্ধৃতি: “could often shows past ability”
শর্টকাট: Ravi → younger age → could → past ability।
উদ্ধৃতি: “the patient may think it is optional and miss an important dose.”
শর্টকাট: optional অর্থ → may; বাধ্যতামূলক অর্থ → must।
সময়ের তুলনা: প্রচলিত পদ্ধতিতে বক্তব্যের ফল ও modal-এর force তুলনা করতে হয়; শর্টকাটে optional ও required অর্থের সংকেত মিলিয়েই পার্থক্য বোঝা যায়।
∴ উত্তর: may ব্যবহার করলে বক্তব্যটি optional বা permission-এর মতো শোনাতে পারে; must strong obligation প্রকাশ করে।
২.৭ Type-৩ : মূলভাব ও বার্তা (Theme)
এর প্রমাণ: “Modals matter because they express permission, ability, necessity, possibility, and advice with precision”. অর্থাৎ modal শুধু কাজের কথা জানায় না; বক্তার উদ্দেশ্য ও মনোভাবও প্রকাশ করে। প্রচলিত পদ্ধতিতে প্রথমে modal-এর সংজ্ঞা, তারপর তার ব্যবহার এবং শেষে বাস্তব সিদ্ধান্তের ওপর প্রভাব বিশ্লেষণ করতে হয়।
উপ-বিষয় ও প্রমাণ:
- Modal-এর অর্থের সূক্ষ্ম পার্থক্য: “the modal verb changes the whole meaning of the instruction.”
- Modal-এর গঠনগত নিয়ম: “Modal + base verb is the usual pattern.”
- সঠিক modal বাছাইয়ের বাস্তব গুরুত্ব: “small changes in these words can change real decisions.”
তাই “must” ও “should”-কে একই অর্থে ব্যবহার করা ঠিক নয়, কারণ পাঠ্যাংশে বলা হয়েছে: “Must expresses strong necessity or obligation, and it is much stronger than should.”
প্রমাণ: “Modals matter because they express permission, ability, necessity, possibility, and advice with precision.”
প্রমাণ: “The modal often changes not the action, but the speaker’s attitude toward the action.”
প্রমাণ: “If the nurse accidentally says, ‘You may take this medicine twice a day,’ the patient may think it is optional.”
প্রশ্ন: “You must wear a helmet” এবং “You should rest” উদাহরণ দুটির ভাষার সুরের পার্থক্য কী?
সমাধান: প্রথমে দুটি modal চিহ্নিত করো: must ও should। এরপর তাদের force তুলনা করো। must শক্ত প্রয়োজন বা বাধ্যবাধকতা প্রকাশ করে, আর should পরামর্শ প্রকাশ করে। প্রমাণ: “Use must for strong necessity or requirement, and should for advice or recommendation.”
শর্টকাটে: strong requirement → must; advice → should।
উদ্ধৃতি: “small changes in these words can change real decisions.”
They help a speaker show ability, permission, obligation, or politeness.”
উদ্ধৃতি: “the modal verb changes the whole meaning of the instruction.”
উদ্ধৃতি: “the patient may think it is optional and miss an important dose.”
Modals matter because they express permission, ability, necessity, possibility, and advice with precision.”
Use must for strong necessity or requirement, and should for advice or recommendation.”
উদ্ধৃতি: “A hospital nurse telling a patient, ‘You must take this medicine twice a day,’”
উদ্ধৃতি: “the patient may think it is optional.”
The modal often changes not the action, but the speaker’s attitude toward the action.”
উদ্ধৃতি: “Modal + base verb is the usual pattern.”
সমাধানকৃত উদাহরণ: প্রশ্ন: “Rita can solve this puzzle” বাক্যটি কেন সঠিক?
প্রচলিত পদ্ধতি: modal can চিহ্নিত করো। এরপর main verb পরীক্ষা করো। solve base form-এ আছে এবং তার সঙ্গে -s যোগ হয়নি।
শর্টকাটে: can + solve = modal + base verb।
উদ্ধৃতি: “After a modal, use the base form of the verb: ‘She can sing well.’”
∴ উত্তর: বাক্যটি সঠিক, কারণ can-এর পরে main verb-এর base form solve বসেছে।
অনুশীলন প্রশ্ন ও সমাধান: প্রশ্ন: “He must to finish early” বাক্যটি কীভাবে সংশোধন করবে?
সমাধান: প্রচলিত পদ্ধতিতে must চিহ্নিত করে তার পরের অংশ পরীক্ষা করতে হবে। modal-এর পরে to বসে না; base verb সরাসরি বসে।
শর্টকাটে: must + finish, not must + to + finish।
উদ্ধৃতি: “A modal is followed directly by the base verb: ‘He must finish early.’”
∴ উত্তর: সঠিক বাক্য হলো “He must finish early.”
= ৩২০ ÷ ৪
= ৮০ কি.মি./ঘণ্টা
∴ Ans.
Type-১ : Meaning of a Modal
Meaning → suitable modal → base verb. First decide whether the sentence shows ability, permission, obligation, advice, possibility, or willingness.
জেনে রাখুন: Should gives advice or a recommendation, while must expresses strong necessity. Evidence: “Should is used when something is advisable but not compulsory.”
Worked example: Sentence: “Anita should rest.”
Step ১: The sentence gives advice, not a compulsory order.
Step ২: The suitable modal is should.
Step ৩: The modal is followed by the base verb rest.
∴ Answer: Should expresses advice. By the conventional method, meaning, modal, and verb are checked separately; the shortcut reaches the same answer through meaning → modal → base verb.
অনুশীলন প্রশ্ন ও সমাধান: Question: “All students must wear helmets.” What meaning does must express?
Solution: The sentence states a requirement, so it expresses strong obligation. Evidence: “Must expresses strong necessity or obligation.”
∴ Answer: Must expresses strong obligation. The conventional method checks the situation first; the shortcut identifies the requirement and selects must immediately.
Type-২ : Modal + Base Verb
Find the modal → inspect the next word → confirm modal + base verb.
জেনে রাখুন: A modal is followed directly by the base form of the main verb. Evidence: “Modal + base verb is the usual pattern.”
Worked example: Sentence: “Ravi could helped the class.”
Step ১: Find the modal: could.
Step ২: Check the main verb: helped is not the base form.
Step ৩: Change helped to the base form help.
Step ৪: Correct sentence: “Ravi could help the class.”
∴ Answer: The correct pattern is could + help. Conventionally, the modal and verb form are checked separately; the shortcut checks only the word immediately after the modal.
অনুশীলন প্রশ্ন ও সমাধান: Question: Correct the sentence: “Anita may speaking clearly.”
Solution: The modal is may. The next verb must be in the base form, so speaking becomes speak.
∴ Answer: “Anita may speak clearly.” The shortcut is may + speak, not may + speaking.
Type-৩ : Force and Exact Meaning
Strong requirement → must; recommendation → should; permission → may or can.
জেনে রাখুন: Choosing a different modal can change the force of a sentence. Evidence: “The modal often changes not the action, but the speaker’s attitude toward the action.”
Worked example: Sentence: “You must wear a helmet.”
Step ১: The sentence presents wearing a helmet as required.
Step ২: A strong requirement needs must, not should.
Step ৩: Must is followed by the base verb wear.
∴ Answer: The sentence expresses strong obligation. Conventionally, first identify the force and then check the verb; the shortcut matches strong requirement directly with must.
অনুশীলন প্রশ্ন ও সমাধান: Question: Which modal best completes this advice? “You ____ rest.”
Solution: The sentence gives a recommendation rather than a compulsory order.
Step ১: Identify the force: advice.
Step ২: Choose should.
Step ৩: Use the base verb rest after the modal.
∴ Answer: “You should rest.” The shortcut identifies advice first and selects should.
Type-৪ : Negative Form
Negative sentence → modal + not + base verb.
জেনে রাখুন: In a negative sentence, not comes after the modal. Evidence: “Negative form is made with not after the modal.”
Worked example: Sentence: “The patient may not take the medicine.”
Step ১: Identify the modal: may.
Step ২: The sentence is negative, so place not after may.
Step ৩: Keep the base verb take after not.
∴ Answer: The correct pattern is may + not + take. Conventionally, identify the modal, identify the negative meaning, and then check the verb; the shortcut places not directly after the modal.
অনুশীলন প্রশ্ন ও সমাধান: Question: Correct the sentence: “Students should to wait.”
Solution: The modal is should. A modal is followed directly by the base verb, so remove to.
∴ Answer: “Students should wait.” The shortcut is should + wait, not should + to + wait.
Type-৫ : Evidence-Based Language Analysis
Claim → identify the modal and rule → give a short quotation → conclusion.
জেনে রাখুন: A conclusion should be based on direct evidence from the text, not on personal opinion. Evidence: “In standard English, modals are used with a base verb.”
Worked example: Question: Why is “Ravi can read” grammatically correct?
Step ১: Identify the modal: can.
Step ২: Identify the main verb: read.
Step ৩: Read is the base form and follows can directly.
Step ৪: Evidence: “After a modal, use the base form of the verb: ‘She can sing well.’”
∴ Answer: The sentence is correct because it follows the pattern can + base verb. Conventionally, the modal, verb form, and quotation are checked in order; the shortcut reduces this to the rule and one-line evidence.
অনুশীলন প্রশ্ন ও সমাধান: Question: Why is “The child could run” correct?
Solution: The modal is could, and run is the base form of the main verb. The sentence therefore follows the usual modal structure.
Evidence: “Modal + base verb is the usual pattern.”
∴ Answer: It is correct because could is followed directly by the base verb run.
