đ Word Formation Rules
âē Initial sound means the first sound or first letter heard in a word: ant begins with /ÃĻ/ and mat begins with /m/.
âē Final sound means the last sound heard in a word: cat ends with /t/ and fan ends with /n/.
âē Words with the same initial sound may begin with different letters only in advanced cases; at this level, match the clearly heard beginning sounds.
âē Words ending in -at often have the same final sound /t/: cat, bat, mat, rat, fat and hat.
âē Words ending in -an often have the same final sound /n/: fan, van and pan.
âē Words ending in -ug often have the same final sound /g/: jug and mug.
âē The final e in make is silent, so the word ends with the sound /k/.
âē Plural nouns may change in spelling and pronunciation: man becomes men, but both begin with /m/.

đĄ Exam Tips
âĸ For initial-sound questions, listen to the first sound, not the whole word.
âĸ For final-sound questions, listen to the last pronounced sound, not necessarily the last written letter.
âĸ Group words such as cat, bat and mat by their final sound /t/.
âĸ Do not confuse the initial sound with the first letter's name; the sound of b in bag is /b/, not /biË/.
âĸ Read every word aloud before marking S for same or D for different.
âĸ Remember these important pairs: man-mat are same initially; apple-mat are different initially; cat-bat are same finally; fan-van are same finally.
âĸ Silent letters can mislead you: the final e in make is not pronounced.
âĸ Check both words in a pair carefully before writing S or D.
âĸ Practise the sound groups /ÃĻ/, /m/, /b/, /f/, /t/, /k/, /n/, /g/, /l/, /s/ and /p/.
